How Getting Organized Can Give You More Space

getting organizedThere are many, many reasons for getting organized. Whether you are a young couple recently married and combining belongings or a parent trying to streamline the process for constantly cleaning up your kids’ messes, an organized living space can make life easier. Another reason to “get organized” is that you’ll discover you have more usable space than you once realized. Organizing your home, one room at a time, will turn your frustration into celebration! At Garage Décor and More, we can show you how.

Kitchen Organization

The pantry is an important space to organize. Especially if you have teenagers, you’ll notice that mere hours can go by after a shopping trip and the pantry will look almost completely bare again! When you have a well-organized pantry, it’s easier to know what groceries are needed, making shopping a breeze. Grocery stores have been doing things right for decades, organizing their shelves so that the newest boxes and products are behind the older items. Keeping cereals and baking goods in labeled containers can also be helpful when organizing.

At Garage Décor and More, we have a knack for pantry organization! We are able to help design and build pantries of all sizes, creating more usable space for homeowners who need it.

Household Closets

Homeowners with plenty of closet space typically don’t take it for granted; having a “place for everything” is a homeowner’s dream! Unfortunately, as our families grow and our possessions increase, finding enough closet space can often be a problem. Garage Décor and More can maximize your existing closet space with ease! For example, we can create more room in the bottom of your closet with the use of storage bins and stackable cabinets or drawers. One handy tip is if you find yourself reaching for items in your closet often, it’s best to put them in a spot that’s easy to find. Keep your everyday essentials in sight and easy-to-reach. It may take some planning on your part to figure out where commonly used items should go, but in the long run it will be well worth it.

An organized linen closet is another key place to store useful household items. Think beach towels, sheets and holiday-themed towels for every bathroom and bedroom! If your linen closet is overflowing, it’s time to give us a call. First and foremost, go through all of those sheets and towels and repurpose any that are old, torn and tattered. Once you’ve decluttered your linens, fold and store the items you want to keep. Store sheet sets within pillowcases to help the clutter. We can show you sample photos of linen closets we have designed, also offering recommendations on the best solution for your particular closet.

If your master bedroom closet needs some TLC, we can redesign that, too. We help homeowners think about their closet space in a more logical, organized way. For instance, it’s best to organize certain clothes and accessories in the closet together if you often wear them as a set. Our high-quality closets are from Redline Closet Systems, offering custom solutions for any size of closet. With Redline, options include 16 shelf and cabinet depths in any height, as well as eight exterior color combinations.

Garage Organization

Having a well-organized garage offers many benefits. Even though the main function of a garage is for storing your vehicles, homeowners appreciate the fact that this extra room in the home can also be used for storing other items. In the garage, ideal storage space can be achieved by going vertical with HandiWALL and Slatwall systems. This wall storage system offers an open design, making it easier to find what you are looking for while staying organized. There are a variety of products that we can incorporate into your home’s organizational scheme that are affordable, convenient and smart.

Garage Décor and More designs and installs custom organization systems in St. Clair and Madison counties in Illinois as well as the St. Louis Metropolitan area. Whether we simply add shelving to an existing closet or do a complete custom cabinetry overhaul by Redline Closet Systems, we can maximize your existing closet space. Still need a more organized bedroom? Here are some other tips.

Minimalistic thinking helps when organizing the bedroom. Before re-organizing any space,we recommend deciding what you really need and what may need to be repurposed or donated. If too much clutter causes you unnecessary stress, it’s best to keep that clutter out of the bedroom since it’s a place you go to when you want to sleep, relax and unwind. The bedroom space, overall, should be a private escape and one that brings you peace and harmony.

Have corner space? Create shelving or a desk! Have a corner spot that may be too small for a dresser or an armchair? It may be an ideal space for a decorative plant or small desk. At Garage Décor and More, we can create custom shelving based on your personal taste. We offer quality cabinetry and shelving by Redline, turning that corner into a more usable space in your bedroom. With shelving, you can place your favorite books, photos and knick-knacks clearly on display and off the floor.

We can create a “bedroom nook” to supplement existing closet space. Even if you’ve already updated your closet space with us but find that you still need more room, we can turn any available wall space into a nook…a place to store additional clothing, shoes and more. Let us visit your home and figure out the best place to create a storage nook to satisfy even the pickiest homeowner. Your nook will blend in seamlessly with the rest of your room’s décor and architecture.

Use “smart furniture” to store your belongings. If you have a small bedroom and not a lot of storage space, instead of purchasing a padded headboard for your bed select one with storage options instead. At Garage Décor and More, we can offer many suggestions on storage solutions that will enhance your bedroom storage space without sacrificing your room’s beauty. Many homeowners also use footboards for storage and under-bed storage to increase their bedroom’s usability.

We have also installed custom wall-beds for clients wanting a space-saving and efficient option for their bedroom. With a wall-bed, your bedroom is transformed from a bedroom to a guest space to an office in seconds! Have you always dreamed of a workout room but didn’t think you had enough space? With a wall-bed, you have the option to make your extra room one with superior multi-tasking abilities! Our wall-beds look like a beautiful piece of custom furniture, use regular mattresses for your utmost comfort, and come in sizes from twin to queen.

Downsizing Dilemma: What Will You Do with All the Stuff You’re Keeping?

downsizingWhen downsizing, it’s more important than ever to be organized and know the best ways to store your belongings. For empty-nesters wanting a smaller home footprint or families deciding to simplify their lives with a smaller home and fewer expenses, the thought of downsizing may be stressful after years of adding to your household collections. Coming up with a plan before you downsize will help alleviate the stress and make the transition an easier one.

The foundation for downsizing efficiently is planning ahead. At Garage Décor and More, we are able to visit your new space and determine ways to alleviate stress when you move. Does the new home have fewer closets? We offer free consultations that include ways to maximize your closet spaces, offering high-quality brands like Redline for master bedrooms and Contur Cabinets for garage solutions.

Your new home will offer new lifestyle options! It might make sense to donate and sell some items that you may have forgotten about, gathering dust in your spare bedroom or attic. If your grown children have been storing their childhood memories in your existing home, it’s time to let them know you are moving into a smaller space and they need to collect their belongings before they are tossed or donated. There are many benefits to downsizing, and one main benefit is that “less stuff” means a simpler lifestyle. Garage Décor and More can help store the items you do want to keep in a logical and efficient manner.

Taking everything you currently own to the new house and thinking you’ll “figure it out” after the move can be extremely stressful. Every nook and cranny may be spoken for when downsizing, so it just makes sense to de-clutter before the move. As expert organizers, we can help determine the best place to put your new desk and options on using your one-car garage to its fullest potential. Our always free consultations give you, the new homeowner, an opportunity to discuss any downsizing dilemma you may have. We will be able to offer suggestions and show you samples of our completed work, take measurements, and create a fully customized design that will work for you.

We have a wide-selection of products to help organize your new space. We can also offer suggestions on things you can do to make the most of your downsizing. Creative concepts like storing items underneath the beds in your bedrooms and installing Hyloft overhead storage racks in your garage for the items that you don’t need on a regular basis or use seasonally may be an option. Smart storage solutions will be the key to a happy, stress-free and downsized lifestyle, and Garage Décor and More has a long list of products that will make your life easier.

Another handy tip about downsizing into a smaller home is to invest in “quality products over quantity”. If you decorate your new home with unique, quality pieces, like a custom dining table or a statement coffee table, it will look better overall. Don’t try and squeeze too many pieces into smaller rooms in your attempt to downsize. It’s also a great idea to use pieces of furniture that can be repurposed. For example, purchase nightstands with storage capabilities and footrests that can also be used as extra seating. Durability is also key when living in smaller spaces, and Garage Décor and More offers products with durable materials homeowners need to thrive in their busy lives.

Getting organized for your brand new, downsized lifestyle will be a breeze with Garage Décor and More! Organization Plays an Important Role in Your Spring Cleaning

spring cleaningThe easiest way to tackle spring cleaning is to make a plan and stick to it. The online resource, The Spruce, offers tips on how to spring clean and organize over a 30-day time period. This way, the process seems a bit less daunting and your spring cleaning plans may seem more achievable. Your checklist may be different than your neighbor’s checklist, so it makes sense to think about your ultimate goal for organizing your home and just get started. Fortunately, you can depend on Garage Décor and More for the products and services required to get your spring cleaning job done!

Before you begin spring cleaning. Keep the running list of what you are trying to achieve either on a master notepad or on your home computer. Borrow or buy some boxes so when you are in the process of organizing, you can distribute items to either donate or consign. When you go through the process it’s also important to repair anything you may be wanting to keep. If you don’t have time to repair during the de-cluttering process, store in a box or a pile the items and keep a running list of what you find needing a bit more “TLC”.

Spring is here. Time to switch out your clothing! If changing out your clothing each season is one of your least favorite things to do, it may be time to have Garage Décor and More redesign your closet spaces. Wouldn’t it be great to have a closet that can accommodate all of your clothing (or at least most of it)? We offer free consultations and can visit your home to see if you are currently making the most out of your existing closet space. It’s likely that one of our closet systems by Redline will easily offer more usable space and look beautiful, too.

When we visit homes, we sometimes notice that a spot for shoes in a closet is often overlooked. If you have more shoes than space, we can offer ideal solutions for your closet so that it’s easier to find each and every pair, no matter if it’s a strappy sandal or leather boot.

Clean linen closets and pantry spaces. Linen closets and pantries are used on a regular basis and are often overlooked and messy! Garage Décor and More has closet systems that work great in all rooms, home offices, laundry rooms and more. With 16 shelf and cabinet depths to choose from, we can work with your linen or pantry space and accommodate items of any size.

As with any re-organization project, it makes sense to first to get rid of or donate any items that you are not using anymore. Looking through the pantry? Throw out any food, snacks or beverages that may have expired. Some pantries are a “catch-all”, so this may take a lot of time. Make sure you know exactly what you want to be using your pantry for and that will help organize it.

Declutter your basement space. Shelves and closets downstairs, too? Don’t forget about organizing your basement spaces. It may be tough, but The Spruce article states to resist the urge to organize the entirebasement. That’s quite the undertaking! It’s too hard to do that and spring clean. That may be a chore for a different day…or series of days. If you focus on cleaning out the shelves and storage areas, throwing away the items you don’t need, you’ll be able to better determine the next steps to get organized. Is it time to update your basement shelving? We offer heavy-duty Workbench cabinets and StoreWALL organization systems. Schedule a consultation with us and we will figure out the best solution for your unique organizational needs.

Closet Tips & Trends for 2019

closet tipsAre you tired of being embarrassed about the closet spaces in your home? Maybe it’s time to invest in a new closet design for 2019. After all, Spring is March 20thand Spring cleaning often means getting your home storage options in tip-top shape. If it’s time to organize, here are some design ideas that listed recently. We loved the tips so much, we decided to share.

At Garage Décor and More we will visit your home for a free consultation. Whether you need more storage in your basement, master bedroom, or garage, we can help. The first tip offered for a closet re-design in this particular article applies to any organizational project you may have: figure out your storage needs beforeyou begin the process.

Before you start designing, it’s best to start decluttering. Go through your closet(s) and get rid of items you no longer need or wear. Invite your friends over for a movie night, asking if they want any of the items you’ve accumulated over the years or donate the unwanted items to a local organization. Some re-sale shops even will pay you for name brand clothing and accessories. Once you have a better idea what needs re-organization in your closet space, it’s easier to think about its design. Otherwise, you’ll be designing storage for items you don’t even use.

Your clothing will take up a certain amount of space. Folded sweaters, for example, take up 9-15 inches of linear space each. Pants or jeans on the hanger will require up to 50 inches of vertical space. Planning on storing winter coats and jackets in the closet you are redesigning? They can take up even more room in your closet! When designing a closet, it’s also important to figure out how many dresses you own or blouses and skirts for work. Do you attend many formal affairs each year? Make sure you have room for those formal dresses and suits. Depending on the clothing, the space needed will vary.

One recommended way to maximize space in a closet design is to utilize corner shelving. In a corner, you can hang clothes or store your purses and suitcases. If you don’t have enough space for a corner shelf, it’s ok to have the panel overlap. It still gives you access to store items you may not use as often, or seasonal items like winter clothes and boots.

A trip to an island sounds good after a long, cold winter, but it’s just as desirable when you’re dreaming of a master bedroom closet redesign. If there is room in your closet, including an island in the plans can be life-changing. Similar to a kitchen island, it’s ideal to have at least 36-inches of a walkway on each side. 30-inches or 24-inches may work, but you’ll be sacrificing some clearance and mobility. More walkway space, means more room for pull-out drawers and more storage!

Adding a shoe rack is also a wonderful idea when re-designing your closet. Make sure you have large enough “shoe cubbies” to store your shoes. Women’s shoes range anywhere from 5 ½ – 10 inches wide, while a man’s pair of shoes can be 6 ½ -10 ½ inches wide. At Garage Décor and More, we will design plenty of space for your shoes and also your winter boots, keeping them organized and well-kept.

Higher-end closets also offer room for a bench to sit. It’s an ideal place to put shoes and stockings on, and typically benches can be installed under higher windows or below drawer storage if an island is also in the plans. A place for accessories is also a wonderful addition to anyone looking to upgrade their closet, offering homeowners a place for their purses, jewelry, neckties, and more. A jewelry tray can be added to one of the drawers in the newly designed space, installed either in the island or in a drawer near a vanity.

At Garage Décor and More, our stylish Redline Closet organization systems offer high-quality solutions for your closet re-design. With so many colors and styles to choose from, your new closet will be a customized to fit your exact needs. Your friends and family will envy your new, beautiful closet for decades!
